Sylvia had played once before, so she'd picked up a little experience. Now, whenever she was dealt a hand full of low cards—say, a
seven, an eight, maybe a ten, and none of them matching suits—she just tossed them aside without a second thought.
But luck wasn’t with her. Hand after hand, she kept getting those slackluster cards, none higher than a ten.
Finally, the next round was a touch better: her highest card was a king of hearts. Still, not exactly a winning ticket.
“You should hold onto that one,” Gabriel said quietly beside her.
A sudden, childish urge to rebel flickered in Sylvia. She pretended not to hear him and promptly discarded her cards.
This round, the showdown cdown to Magdalen and Josiah. Magdalen pushed Josiah out with a bold play, but when she turned

Grinning in triumph, Magdalen turned and blew a tic kiss to Morrison, prompting a chorus of groans from the rest of the
table.
Josiah’s groan was the loudest.
Amiee Jordan shot him a look of exasperation. “Do you even know how to play this game?”
“| just misjudged this time! Don’t worry, you'll see," Josiah said, rolling up his sleeves and rubbing his hands together. "I'll get
revenge for you yet!”
Sylvia couldn't help feeling a pang of regret. Maybe she should've held out a little longer.
Behind her, Gabriel's voice cquietly, “That's what happens when you don’t listen.”
Sylvia kept her eyes forward, muttering under her breath, “Estelle folded even with a pair, so even if I'd stayed, I'd never have
made it to the end.”
“Which means,” Gabriel replied, his tone turning even cooler, “you still don’t trust me.”
Sylvia choked on her next words, suddenly wary of arguing back.
Gabriel noticed her silence and frowned, wondering if he'd been too harsh.
From his seat behind her, he studied her profile up close. The lines of her face were smooth and elegant, her cheeks softly
rounded, her eyes slightly upturned at the corners. When she smiled, she looked innocent and inviting; when she was focused, she
seemed gentle yet enchanting.
A wavy strand of hair curled by her ear, framing her delicate, porcelainplexion. The lamplight made her skin glow with a
translucent blush, her ear almost luminous.
Gabriel found himself watching her intently—really looking at her for the first time.
Sensing his gaze, Sylvia slowly turned her head. Their eyes met. Gabriel's dark, thoughtful stare made her heart skip, and she
quickly turned away, pretending to listen to the others’ conversation.
