Gabriel's voice grew even lower. “Then just wait until you see Grandpa. Return it to him yourself. He gave it to you—it's not my

place to take it back.”

Sylvia stared at him, her fingers curling unconsciously. “You're leaving tomorrow?”

He nodded. “Yeah.” Suddenly, his gaze flicked past her. The door to the private room next to them swung open, and four or five

people stumbled out, clearly drunk. One of them, shoved by his friends, staggered straight toward Sylvia.

Gabriel reached out and yanked Sylvia to the side just as the drunken man lost his balance and lurched forward.

Pulling Sylvia back with him, Gabriel braced himself against the wall as she collided into his chest. At the stime, he lashed out

with his foot and sent the stumbling man sprawling.

The guy was huge—at least six foot tall and built like a linebacker. Gabriel's kick sent him flying, and he crashed onto the floor with

a heavy thud.

The man’s friends sobered up halfway at the sight. Two hurried over to help the guy off the floor, while the other two advanced on

Gabriel.

“Hey, man, what's your problem?” one of them slurred, his face flushed and mouth twisted from too much alcohol. He reached out,

aiming for Gabriel's collar.

Before he could touch him, Sylvia spun around and landed a solid kick to his arm. There was a sickening crack, and the man

howled, stumbling backward as he clutched his now-broken limb.

The rest of the group closed in, eyeing Gabriel and Sylvia with a wariness that hadn't been there before.

Gabriel stepped in front of Sylvia, silent, but the sheer force of his presence and the cold edge in his eyes made the others falter.

“Why—why’d you hit us?” one of them stammered.

Gabriel didn’t answer. He didn’t need to.

The group exchanged uneasy looks, grabbed their injured friends, and staggered away, their bravado evaporating.

People instinctively avoid the strong; it's basic self-preservation.

Silence returned to the corridor. A couple of waiters who had been passing by pretended they'd seen nothing and quickly slipped

away.

Gabriel turned to Sylvia, his voice cool. “I was here. You didn’t need to get involved.”

Sylvia leaned lightly against the wall, her gaze lowered. “It was an instinct.”
