Jared Holcomb was my ex-husband, and he’d looked out fora lot. Of course, I'd also brought in sprofits
for the company, so | guess that makes us even.
Now that | was ready to move on to someone else, | figured it was tto make a clean break and keep my own
life simple and -free.
I'd already picked my successor. Ever since | got back from overseas, I'd been intentionally delegating important
tasks to him.
Right now, | was confident he could handle the job. I'll admit, | was a bit selfish in picking him.
There was another female executive who was capable, but she was fake. | didn’t like her phony sweetness and
Follow on NovᴇlEnglish.nᴇtflattery-it always felt like empty bubbles to me. If | ever really needed her in the future, | doubt she'd ever really
have my back.
So, | chose another male executive-someone reliable, with good character, and real drive.
Edward would be coming by tomorrow, so I had to discuss this with Jared today.
I had enough funds on hand to take stoff, and even if | wanted to start my own business down the line,
I'd be set.
| went to Jared's office and saw him in a meeting.
| waited in the lounge next door.
To my surprise, just two minutes later, Jared wrapped up the meeting and walked over to me.
He stood over me, his expression impossible to read.
| stood up, met his eyes, and handed him my resignation letter.
Jared's eyes flickered in disbelief. He looked up at me, then in the next second, tore my resignation letter in half
and tossed it into the trash. “Why are you going back on your word? Didn't you say you wouldn't quit? Were you
just lying to me?”
| knew he’d have feelings about this, but | kept calm. “Jared, thank you for all the opportunities and experience
you've givenhere, but from now on, | want to carve out my own path.”
“I told you, | could always be your safety net...”

“Jared, what do you call this?” I let out a small, bitter laugh. “This is just an ambiguous relationship, not a safety
net. Now that I've decided to be with Edward, | need to cut off all the ambiguity in my life.”
“Victoria, are you really going to cut things off completely? We've known and loved each other for two
lifetimes...”
“Honestly, my life used to be a total mess, and that's why | need to take a step back. Maybe if | keep things
simple between us, | can avoid a lot of .” | met his gaze. “We’ve known each other for ages, Jared.”
Jared's eyes turned a little red, and he gave a self-deprecating laugh. “Yeah, we've known each other so long
that | thought if I just stuck around, you'd eventually cback. Guess | was just too full of myself.”
“You've always been like that,” | said.
Jared fell silent, staring up at the ceiling for a moment before nodding. “Alright, if you want to quit, I'll let you go.
So, what's next for you?”
“We'll see. Honestly, | don’t really know yet,” | replied, a little dazed.
Jared turned around and picked up his desk phone, dialing HR.
“No need to trouble them. I'll just go down and get it myself,” | said.
But Jared just sat on the couch, holding his face in his hands. | had no idea what was running through his mind.
Not long after, the HR assistant cby with a resignation form.
| thanked her, grabbed a pen, and started filling it out right there.
Jared took the pen from me, signed his nwithout hesitation, then said, “Your remaining salary and bonus will
be credited to your account over the next few days.”
“Alright, I'll stay for another three days to make sure the transition goes smoothly,” | said, getting up and
heading out.
As soon as | got back to my office, Mariah senta few photos. The new school building was finished, looking
grand and elegant.
As | looked at the bold blue letters on the building, a gentle warmth filled my heart.
