Jill's brother walked over and carefully checked the saddles and reins, patiently going over ssafety tips.
Jill swung herself onto her horse in one smooth motion, sitting tall and confident in the saddle. Her face lit up
with excitement as she called out behind her, “Sloane! Con! Let's do a few laps together!”
Sean had arranged for a trainer to help Sloane mount, but before the trainer could step forward, Sloane placed
her left foot firmly in the stirrup, gripped the saddle with her right hand, and vaulted onto the horse with graceful
ease.
Jill's jaw nearly hit the ground. “Wait a second-you said you didn’t know how to ride!”
That mount was cleaner than hers.
Sloane shot her a playful wink. “I learned from watching you just now. You looked so cool, | figured I'd copy your

Jill stared at her suspiciously. “You seriously just picked that up now?”
“Mhm. Just now.” Sloane nodded earnestly.
“Well then,” Jill said proudly, puffing out her chest again, “I'll be your teacher for the day.”
Sean could only shake his head. His little sister was far too easy to fool.
Jill galloped off into the field, bursting with energy, while the trainer led Sloane’s horse along at a slow, steady
pace. The trainer gave her a rundown of the basics-how to handle the reins, what to do in case of a buck-but
Sloane's attention kept drifting toward Jill as she charged across the paddock with reckless joy. A smile tugged at
the corner of her lips.
Before long, Jill trotted back over, breathless and glowing with excitement. “Did you see that lap? Was | awesome
or what?”
“You were amazing,” Sloane replied immediately. “I couldn't take my eyes off you.”
Beaming, Jill asked, “How's it going on your end?”
“Pretty well,” Sloane said with a small laugh, nudging her horse gently forward.
Jill cantered a circle around her. “You're doing great already. Keep this up and you'll be galloping likein no
time!”

“I've got one more cool trick to show you!” Jill's eyes sparkled as she gave her horse a light kick. The mare
instantly surged forward.
With effortless balance, Jill leaned into the motion. In the center of the arena, she pulled off a sharp, showy turn
and cracked her whip in the air. The sound echoed across the paddock, drawing the attention and admiration of
several nearby riders.
Sloane watched with a warm smile-until a sudden, piercing whinny shattered the calm.
“Look out! Get out of the way!”
Her head whipped around. A black stallion had broken into a wild, frenzied sprint, its rider barely clinging on and
yanking helplessly at the reins. Behind them, several riders on horseback tried to intercept the runaway horse.
Just when it seemed they might succeed, the rider-a woman-shouted furiously, “Don’t you dare hurt my horse!”
She lashed out at anyone who approached, striking both riders and horses with her whip. The chaos escalated
instantly: horses shrieked and bucked, throwing their riders and scattering in every direction.
The black stallion, now totally unrestrained, charged straight toward Jill.
Jill froze.
She'd never seen anything like this before. Her own horse, spooked by the madness, reared up and bolted. She
held on for dear life, arms wrapped around the horse’s neck, screaming as they careened across the field.
