“We're stuck at the clinical trial stage right now. What we need is capital-once we get funding, everything can
move forward smoothly,” Adrian said, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. “You should talk to Lucas.
With your relationship, securing the investment should be easy.”
Lucas had shown interest in the project initially, but for sreason, he’d suddenly gone quiet. That was the
only reason Adrian had to ccrawling to Sloane now.
Sloane let out a cold laugh. She crossed her legs, leaned back against the sofa, and swept her gaze across the
room, eyes icy.
“So letget this straight-you draggedback here because you think I'm still useful to you?”
Marshall's face stiffened. He clearly didn’t like how this was going, but he gritted his teeth and tried the
sentimental route. “Sloane, | know we didn’t treat you right in the past. But this concerns the future of the Rivers
family-your future too.”
Sloane's expression didn’t budge. A sneer tugged at her lips. “And what does any of that have to do with me?”
Marshall pressed on, trying to sweeten the deal. “Think about it-if Conrad's research succeeds, our family’s
status in Stonebridge will rise. The Hawthornes won't dare to back out of the engagement.”
Samantha, ever the actress, dabbed at her eyes with a tissue and chimed in, voice trembling, “Sis, it’s my fault. |
took your place as the Rivers daughter. | took the life that should've been yours. If you're willing to help Adrian,
I'll do anything to make it up to you.”

Samantha hesitated, then nodded, forcing sincerity into her expression.
“Great. Then | won't make it hard for you,” Sloane said, voice calm and deliberate. “Pack your things and move
out of the Rivers home. Then hold a press conference and tell the world you're a fake. Return the title of ‘Rivers
heiress’ to its rightful owner. Can you do that?”
The tears froze on Samantha’s cheeks. Panic and unwillingness flashed across her face, but she quickly masked
it with another layer of pitiful fragility.
“For the Rivers family... I'll do anything. I... I'll leave now...” she whispered, then turned and walked away,
tically covering her face.

Adrian rushed to her side, furious. He glared at Sloane. “You've gone too far! Sammy is and always will be my
sister. No one’s kicking her out!”
Sloane's arms folded across her chest as she let out a sharp, bitter laugh. “Too far? Her mother swapped us at
birth for her own selfish gain. While she lived in luxury at my house, | couldn’t even eat properly in hers. And
now I'm the one in the wrong for asking to reclaim what’s mine? You really are something else.”
The room fell silent. Her words left them speechless. None of them had ever cared enough to find out how she'd
lived growing up.
Adrian, now clearly out of patience, stepped forward with urgency. “Enough. Just answer the question are you
going to help us or not?”
Sloane slowly raised her eyes, looked straight at him, and replied without hesitation.
“No.”
Marshall's face darkened in an instant. Whatever pretense he'd been clinging to vanished.
